As interest in private markets continues to grow, there is mounting pressure for asset managers to deliver products swiftly whilst addressing stringent regulations. It is a highly a complex landscape to navigate.

This is partly owing to the recent rapid expansion of the market. With total global assets under management expected to reach $13.01 trillion by July 2024, the market is evolving, as is the legislation that surrounds it. Whilst regulations are now designed to make it easier for investors entering Europe, it still takes time to understand all the finer details and avoid potential pitfalls along the way.

To better understand the pain points, Carne Group conducted a survey with US fund managers. Our fascinating new Atlas 2024 Report maps out the private market landscape, explores the US fund manager’s unique perspective and pinpoints their strategies for addressing the issues.

In a changing environment,
get ahead of the curve.

The asset management industry is experiencing a silent super evolution. Product innovations, distribution and operational models are being redefined. The speed of change has caught the market by surprise and companies are finding they must adapt to the stress on operations and margin pressures in uncertain times. Our four-part research series, Supermodel, dives deep into these changes, with insights from 200 global leaders on the strategies needed to succeed.

A preview of what’s inside:

  • 63% of firms report that a typical fund launch now takes over 10-12 months, with inefficiencies in regulatory readiness and fund registration as key bottlenecks.
  • Over half of asset managers say their growth strategies are causing operational inefficiencies, especially in non-core areas like middle and back-office functions.
  • 77% of large asset managers are consolidating or discontinuing funds to control costs, while nearly 8 in 10 see the value of shifting fixed costs to variable.
  • Third-party management companies (ManCos) have proven their worth: 64% of firms using third-party ManCos have seen faster time-to-market, and 57% have improved cost efficiency.

Changes industry-wide have resulted in the rise of supermodels – where leveraging third-party ManCos can help accelerate time to market, reduce costs, and manage increased regulatory demands. The report reveals through data-driven insights why outsourcing is now considered a smart, strategic choice for growth and resilience.

Amid our research, four key themes to success became clear.

  • Under Pressure: Margin pressures intensify for fund managers
  • Operational Overhaul: How growth strategies are changing the demands on operations
  • Breaking Point: Growth pains of operating models
  • Future Proofing: The next generation operating models

Over the coming months, we will be bringing these findings to you as four separate parts; presenting our findings and sharing our insights.
